The Bell Stone at Hafslo

Type: Stone with legend about church bells
Local name: Klokkesteinen

Locality
County: Vestland
Municipality: Luster
Location: Klokkesteinvegen, Beheimsfeltet, Hafslo

This boulder is found in the middle of a residential area by the village Hafslo, on the north side of Lake Hafso. The stone is located on private land.

Description
The solid boulder measures several meters in each direction. It is tall and triangular seen from the side. The stone, made of granite, is part of a block belt from the last ice age that ran on the north side of Lake Hafslo.

Cultural history and tradition
It is not surprising that this majestic boulder, shaped almost like a church, has gained a place in local folklore. According to legend, the stone moved each time the church bells in the Hafslo Church rang. Earlier, a dirt road passed by here, and the area was called Klokkesteinåkeren (‘The Bell Stone Field’]. When the municipality built a residential area here in the 1970s, the new road through the area was named Klokkesteinvegen (‘The Bell Stone Road’).
