The singing stone at Osevad
Type: Ringing stone
Lokalt navn: Syngesteinen
Locality
County: Rogaland
Municipality: Eigersund
Location: Osevad, Høyland
Høyland is a farm along Eiaveien, and the singing stone is found at the end of an agricultural road about 1.5 kilometers south of the farmyard. It is located by Osevad, where a footbridge crosses over to the south side of the river Ronåna.
Description
The stone is placed in a row with other stones. The shape is oblong, 145 x 85 cm, and the thickness is from 25 (to the east) to 40 cm (to the west). It has a clear sound, and gives two distinct pitches (B and D), especially at the end closest to the footbridge, to the east—cf. the sound recording.
Cultural history and tradition
The farm owners at Høyland tell that the stone was moved here many years ago, meant for use as foundation stone for a new bridge over the river at this place. They have walked on the stone without realising that it was a singing stone, until they accidentally discovered that it sounded. Consequently, there are no legends or stories going further back in time.
