The Singing Stone at Skåra
Type: Ringing stone
Local name: Syngjarsteinen, Syngesteinen
Locality
County: Rogaland
Municipality: Eigersund
Location: Skåra, Egersund
The stone is found on the farm Skåra, approximately three kilometers east of Egersund. When you come from Egersund, follow Heggdalsveien 2.2 kilometers, and take Skåraveien to the left, at the sign ‘0.7 Hestesenter’. Drive all the way to the inner courtyard, where there is parking by the stables. From the buildings, follow the fire road east for about 300 meters. The ringing stone is located on a small hill to the right, about 100 meters from the fire road.
Description
The stone measures 110 x 155 cm, and is approx. 70 cm high. Like many other ringing stones, a piece of it was once knocked off, because people wanted to find out if it contained metal. It is placed directly on the bedrock, with which it has good contact in the middle. The shape is oval, and the stone ends in a point in the air on one side. At this point, the sound is best, even if it has sound all over. There are two different tones (F # and G #), which can be heard in the last part of the audio recording here.
Cultural history and tradition
There are no traditions or legends connected to the stone. The former user at Skåra discovered it, during a walk across the heath. He walked with another man, who used stick, and by chance struck on this stone. They discovered that it had a good sound, and the farmer later picked up the tractor and pulled the stone a few meters up the ridge (where it is placed now), so that it became more accessible. Bente Anette Skåra, who now lives on the farm, has for several years led riding tours in this area, and she has shown the ringing stone to many tourists. – Dutch people in particular are fascinated by the sound, Skåra says in an article in Stavanger Aftenblad.
